有机颜料是不溶性有机物,通常以高度分散状态加入底物而使底物着色。它与染料的根本区别在于,染料能够溶解在所用的染色介质中,而颜料则既不溶于使用它们的介质，也不溶于被着色的底物。不少颜料和染料在化学结构上是一致的,采用不同的使用方法,可以使它们之间相互转化,比如某些还原染料和硫化还原染料，若其还原成隐色体,则可以作为纤维染料;若不经还原,可以作为颜料用于高级油墨。有机颜料广泛地用于油墨、油漆、涂料、合成纤维的原浆着色，以及织物的涂料印花、塑料及橡胶、皮革的着色等,其中油墨的颜料使用量最大。目前，有机颜料的产量占染料总产量的四分之一左右。
